The Core Variable: Concentration
Every fragrance is a dilution. Aromatic compounds — the actual scent materials — are dissolved in a carrier, typically alcohol and water. The percentage of aromatic concentrate in that mixture is what defines the concentration category.

What Changes at Higher Concentration?
More aromatic compound doesn't simply mean "stronger." It changes the character of the fragrance in several meaningful ways.
Projection vs. longevity. Lower concentrations tend to project more aggressively in the first hour — the alcohol carries the top notes outward quickly. Higher concentrations, particularly extraits, project more intimately and evolve more slowly. The sillage is closer to the skin, but it lasts significantly longer.
Complexity over time. A well-constructed Extrait de Parfum reveals itself in stages. The top notes open the composition, the heart develops over the first hour, and the base — typically the richest, most resinous elements — anchors the fragrance for hours afterward. At lower concentrations, this arc is compressed or lost entirely.
Skin feel. Extraits typically contain less alcohol, which means less of the sharp, astringent opening that some people find harsh. The application feels richer, more immediate.
The Value Equation
Extrait de Parfum is almost always priced higher than its Eau de Parfum counterpart. But the math often works in the extrait's favour. If an EDP requires 6–8 sprays to achieve the same longevity as 3–4 sprays of an extrait, the cost-per-wear difference narrows considerably. A 100ml bottle of extrait, used conservatively, can outlast a 100ml EDP by months.

Choose Eau de Parfum if: you prefer stronger initial projection, wear fragrance in contexts where longevity beyond 6 hours isn't a priority, or are newer to fragrance and want a more familiar experience.
Choose Extrait de Parfum if: you want all-day wear from a single application, prefer a fragrance that evolves on skin rather than projecting loudly, or are building a serious fragrance wardrobe and want the full expression of a composition.
